Tesla Model S and Model X Face Q2 Delivery Extension in China

Tesla‘s Model S and Model X, which are not locally produced in China and are sold as imported vehicles, are experiencing an extension in their expected delivery dates. The latest information from Tesla’s China website, monitored by Auto in China, reveals that all versions of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV now have expected delivery dates in the second quarter. This marks a shift from the previous expectation of delivery in the first quarter of 2024, maintained for the past several months.

In China, the Model S is available in a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version and a tri-motor all-wheel-drive Plaid version, with starting prices of RMB 698,900 ($97,470) and RMB 828,900, respectively. Similarly, the Model X comes in a regular dual-motor all-wheel-drive version and a tri-motor all-wheel-drive Plaid version, starting at RMB 738,900 and RMB 838,900, respectively.

While Tesla‘s less expensive Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV retain their expected delivery dates of 2-6 weeks in China, the Shanghai plant continues to produce these models. The Model S and Model X, although making a limited contribution globally, accounted for approximately 5 percent of Tesla’s total deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2023, alongside the Cybertruck.

The Model S and Model X currently available in China are the 2020 versions, imported in late February 2023. Initial prices for the Model S were RMB 789,900 and RMB 879,900 for the Model X. However, prices for all versions of both models were raised by RMB 19,000 on May 5, 2023. Despite the increase, Tesla offered discounts last July, reducing prices by approximately 20 percent on September 1.

While the Cybertruck is set to debut in eight Chinese cities, starting with Shanghai in late January, its sales launch in China might be delayed. Following this debut, Tesla’s entire lineup, including Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, will embark on a nationwide tour alongside the Cybertruck, according to local media outlet The Paper.
