Powered by batteries for flight, the EH216-S has a maximum takeoff weight of 650 kilograms, achieving a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour and a maximum endurance of 25 minutes, as previously disclosed by EHang.

EHang submitted a Type Certificate application for the EH216-S to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on December 28, 2020, with the review process commencing in January 2021. On October 13, 2023, the CAAC officially issued a Type Certificate, qualifying the EH216-S for commercial operation as a manned drone.

Following this certification, on December 21, 2023, the EH216-S received the standard Airworthiness Certificate and was delivered to its inaugural customers. The UAM completed its first commercial flight demonstrations in Guangzhou and Hefei on December 28.

EHang plans to deploy the EH216-S in commercial operations such as low-altitude tours and city sightseeing, expanding its application in various operational scenarios.

In addition to EHang, Xpeng Aeroht, the flying car division of Xpeng, is another notable player in the Chinese market. Xpeng Aeroht, founded in 2013 and majority-owned by Xpeng and its CEO He Xiaopeng, unveiled the X1 at the Shanghai auto show in April 2021. Xpeng Aeroht’s development path includes eVTOL flying cars and modular flying cars, with pre-orders for the latter opening in China in the fourth quarter and mass production and delivery expected in the fourth quarter of 2025.
